Throughout the body, there are nerve fibers that carry sensations such as touch, warmth, pressure and
pain. It is these fibers which carry pain signals to the central nervous system and then onto the pain
center of the brain. Prescription drugs numb the area of the brain where the pain signal is received. TENS, however stops the pain sensation from ever reaching the brain, overwhelming the pain signal with a massage-like sensation.

Conventional TENS stimulate nerve fibers through low level waves of electricity delivered by electrodes placed on the surface of the skin. It is believed that these waves of electricity block the ability of nerve endings to receive pain. This is commonly known as the "gating" effect. It is also thought that TENS facilitates the release of endorphins, pain-suppressing substances produced naturally by the body.
